Swiss tourism courts South India with road shows

SWITZERLAND Tourism is aggressively targeting South India to increase the number of arrivals from this region to Switzerland with road shows and workshops for travel agents.

A team of 14 stakeholders, including Swiss Air Line, Davos (the highest town in Europe), Glacier Express, GoldenPass Line, Jungfrau Railways, Interlaken Tourism, Schilthorn Cableways, Mystery Park and Zurich Airport, among others, are present in the city to promote their destinations.

Ms Regi Wittwer, Country Manager, Switzerland Tourism, said that India is seen as an important source market for arrivals into Switzerland. In 2004, there were about 97,400 arrivals to Switzerland from India, an increase of 15 per cent over the previous year.

The average length of stay for an Indian is three nights and the daily expenditure is $280-300. One of the major reasons for Indians visiting Switzerland is the contrast between the two countries. The main activities for Indian tourists are shopping and going in for a mountain experience.

She said that Switzerland Tourism has been working closely with film producers for a long time and has helped in exploring new locales for shooting. A film producers' guide, `Switzerland for Movie Stars,' was prepared and launched in Hyderabad and Chennai.

Switzerland Tourism is also planning to start a specialist programme for travel agents and a Switzerland Network Programme. The second one includes Internet-based learning aids, local training sessions in India and onsite education trips in Switzerland.

Mr Desmond Chacko, Marketing Manager, Swiss International Air Lines Ltd, said that India is seen as an important source market for the airline. An increase in the number of flights to India is high on the priority list, but is constrained by the lack of aircraft.
