EXPRESSING deep sorrow and grief over the human causalities due to the tsunami, the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi has extended appeal to its constituents to come forward for extending relief to large numbers of affected people.
In a statement issued here, Mr Sanghi said that based on the feedback it received from its affiliated chambers such as Madras and Cochin Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Andhra Pradesh and the Karnataka Chambers of Commerce, the estimated loss brought on by the tsunamis hitting Indians shores could be over Rs 2,000 crore.
"It was observed that neither manufacturing nor any other economic activities are going to be adversely impacted due to tsunami waves, barring the shipping industry and tourism in Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar islands," the Chamber said. "Three ships costing around Rs 150 crore have been damaged at Chennai port. The losses estimated for Andaman & Nicobar exceed over Rs 1,000 crore. Over Rs 800 crore losses are estimated for Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh."
