Hyderabad , Feb. 9

MICKEY Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Aladdin and a host of other cartoon characters from the Disney stable would speak Telugu.

A day after launching the Tamil version of Toon Disney, Walt Disney Television International-India (WDTVI) has started the 24-hour Telugu channel, targeting children in the age group of 4-14 years.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday after announcing the launch of the Telugu channel, Mr Rajat Jain, Managing Director of WDTVI, said animated features such as Tarzan, Timon and Pumbaa had been lined up.

"India is a priority market for the company. It is central to our growth strategy in emerging marketing," he said, pointing out that India was the first in the Asia-Pacific region to get the regional language channel from Disney.

Asked about developing content in local languages, he said the Disney icons were accepted globally as characters universal in nature. He, however, said that the company might consider globally relevant content available here.

The company accumulated 1,800 hours of dubbed content in Telugu for the year. Mr Rajat said the response was good. The company expected revenues in the form of subscriptions and advertisements.
