ONGC Karnataka project: PM's intervention sought

Bangalore, June 7

KARNATAKA has criticised the Union Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar's statement that the Rs 25,000-crore petrochemical project of ONGC in the State was not feasible.

"When the Centre can grant a mega petrochemical project to Gujarat, why not for Karnataka," the State Industries Minister, Mr P.G.R. Sindhia, told newspersons. Mr Sindhia said that he will meet the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi to seek his intervention in saving the project.

He said the State would ensure that the MoU signed between the Canara Chambers of Commerce, the State Government and the Centre was honoured. He pointed out that one of the partners of the project, Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd, has already provided Rs 10 crore for acquiring land for the project.
