Social Welfare Rs 150-cr outlay to assist AP tribal families Our Bureau
Hyderabad , June 14 THE State Tribal Welfare Department has prepared an action plan for 2005-06 with an outlay of Rs 150 crore to assist 1.50 lakh tribal families. Besides, taking up coffee plantation in 7,508 acres with an outlay of Rs 13.22 crore this year, cashew plantation would also be developed in 1.20 lakh acres with a business potential of Rs 10 crore. On being briefed about these and several measures of the Department, the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, asked the officials to take measures to procure more honey, gum karaya, sheekakai, tamarind, myrobalans from the forest and improve the marketing of these products. Dr Reddy said these products are much in demand in the market and the cold storage plants could be utilised to enhance their shelf life. He also instructed the officials to engage the services of an expert for suggestions on how to improve its market and ameliorate the conditions of tribals. The department officials said the formation of Tribal Mining Co-operative Societies at four places namely Andravara, Kusumagaruvu, Littiguda and Turaiguda would take place during the current year. Explaining the progress of activities taken up during 2004-05, they said a total of 43,862 acres horticulture plantation was taken up benefiting (44,881) scheduled tribe families, apart from energisation of MI sources and development of MI programme at a total cost of Rs 22.89 crore. A special project was sanctioned for Chenchu development with an outlay of Rs 2.62 crore jointly with Centre on 50:50 basis. Under Janashree Bhima Yojana, all the 12,000 Chenchu families were brought under insurance coverage of LIC. The tribal population in the State is around 50.24 lakh comprising 6.59 per cent of the total population of 7.62 crore according to 2001 census.
