Tata Motors eyes tie-ups in Thailand

Our Bureau

Mumbai , June 29

TATA Motors is in talks with potential partners in Thailand for a presence in that country.

"As Thailand is the largest market for pick-ups outside the US, Tata Motors is exploring ways of establishing presence in Thailand. It is in discussion with prospective partners. However, no final decision has been taken and it would be premature to disclose any details at this stage," an official statement said.

This was in response to a report earlier today in the Bangkok Post which said Thai Rung Union Car Plc (TRU), Thailand's biggest pick-up truck modifier, had signed an agreement with Tata Motors to set up a manufacturing plant for domestic and export markets.

While neither company confirmed the agreement , the report quoted TRU's managing director as saying that discussions were at an advanced stage and a deal may be announced in a week or two.

According to the report, a MoU was signed last week to initially introduce the redesigned Tata 207 pick-up model with a 140-bhp Euro 3 engine. The venture hoped to sell 5,000-10,000 units in the first year.

Further, it planned to produce the Tata X3 — a 600 cc, 100 bhp, 2-cylinder, 4-seater for urban markets — by 2007 or 2008. Sports utility vehicles were also planned for future production.
