Strategy Variety - Entertainment & Leisure GV Films starts production of 3D TV serial Paramapadam Our Bureau
Chennai , Aug. 31 GV Films Ltd has started production of Paramapadam, a live 3D television fantasy thriller of 52 episodes. Mr V. Ravee, CEO, GV Films Ltd, said that cost of production was about Rs 15 lakh per episode. The company has acquired the technology and exclusive rights to produce live 3D content in India from D3, a company based in Los Angeles that has patented technology for out-of-the-box effects. Talking about the technology, he said that it was not possible to convert an existing TV programme or film to real 3D. Various tricks or gags have been used for many years for the `depth-like' effect, but none have proven commercially acceptable. To achieve real 3D, it has to be produced in 3D, any form of `conversion' will yield less, he said. The Anaglyph system of 3D television production is followed here. The natural vision (Anaglyph) shot is with a special rig of two cameras, producing a left eye and a right eye view. The two resulting videotapes are edited (more-or-less conventionally) then encoded using the patented 3D encoding system. The result is a single videotape, in 3D, ready for broadcast. According to a press release, this is the only 3D system which the Federal Communication Commission has approved for broadcast. It allows "off the screen" 3D effects. But, without 3D glasses, the image looks blurred. Mr Ravee said that the glasses would be distributed through the sponsors, the cable operators and would also be available in the open market. The modalities are being worked out, he said. The production of the serial Paramapadam started on August 29. This is a bi-lingual production in Tamil and Hindi. Paramapadam, based on the Snakes and Ladders game, is directed by Mr Naaga, a well-known director of tele serials. Paramapadam is a traditional game played in India and based on the philosophical concept of Karma. A game of Mr Mukesh Khanna who won his spurs as Beeshmar in Mahabharath and later as Shakthiman will play a key role as the wise old man. Mr.Daniel Symmes, the inventor of 3DR, is in Chennai to shoot the serial. The serial is slated to go on air around Deepavali and subsequently on every weekend.
