New Delhi , Sept. 1

THE number of `.in' registrants has crossed 1.3 lakh, generating a revenue of Rs 9 crore since January. The Department of Information Technology (DIT) and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) had taken the initiative to re-launche the `.in' registry to popularise its usage.

"In order to bring about a substantially increased proliferation of `.in' domain name, a new Internet domain name policy framework and implementation plan has been formulated and was announced by the Government in October 2004.

The policy aimed to remove the restrictions in the existing procedures impeding a liberal, expeditious and market-friendly approach to register large number of `.in' domain names.

The registration of the `.in' domains has grown from 6,500 names to 1,30,000 in August," said an official press release
