Radio/TV `Use AIR as vehicle in educating people' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Sept 25 THE CEO of Prasar Bharati, Mr K.S. Sarma, has called for use of All India Radio (AIR) as a vehicle to reach out to the masses with educative messages. Addressing a gathering before presenting Prasar Bharati Unicef Awards for films as change agents, he said that AIR, with 215 stations covering every nook and corner of the country, has a base of 40 crore listeners a day. (The awards were given away to mark the Girl Child Day.) He called upon Unicef and other organisations to use AIR as a vehicle in educating the people on the importance of protecting the girl child. Mr Michel Saint-Lot, State Representative (Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka) of Unicef, spoke about the disturbing figures showing the plight of girl child. Ms Amala Akkineni, actress, said that there was a need to promote alternative cinema to focus on the rights of girls. "Commercial cinema has limitations as it is a prisoner of budget. But alternative cinema can bring home the message with limited resources." To mark the Girl Child Day, the Unicef-Doordarshan combine conducted a film competition to highlight the rights of girls. About 100 entries were received. The list included short films and 30-45 second TV spots. In the short films category, Kalam Marindi, produced by Mr Sanku, and Paschatapam by Mr Thota Janardhan Rao won the first and second prizes respectively.
