RELIANCE Life Sciences Pvt Ltd is planning to soon commence clinical trials of a new vaccine, Relivax-DC, used in the treatment of prostrate cancer .

Addressing a Global Conference on India R&D 2005 organised by FICCI, Dr Shakti N. Upadhyay, Research Director, Drug Discovery and Development, Reliance Life Sciences, said, "We have finished the pre-clinical trial evaluations of Relivax-DC. Very soon we would be going for clinical evaluation of the vaccine." The company is likely to apply for regulatory approvals to conduct the clinical trials in India.

It has been working on new concepts for vaccines and the Relivax-DC vaccine uses a new approach to treat prostrate cancer. The same platform could be extended to other vaccines used in the treatment of other kinds of cancer, HIV/AIDS and some other diseases. The vaccine has been developed in-house, and at present the company is not looking at any form of partnership for the clinical trials. Dr Upadhyay said the overall vaccine market is estimated to be $5 billion and is expected to grow to $15 billion by the 2010.

Reliance Life Sciences, a part of the Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries, is hoping to be a research-driven organisation in the domains of medical, plant and industrial biotechnology. It also offers full service clinical research organisation providing clinical research and medical services to third party clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, nutraceuticals and cosmetics sectors.

In the long run, Reliance Life Sciences is betting on stem cell research in a big way. The stem cell-enriched cord blood repository has about 3,000 units. It is also focusing on bio-fuels and has plans of scaling up its jatropha plantation soon.
