HFCL signs Rs 450-cr handsets deal with Reliance Infocomm

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi , Dec. 7

HIMACHAL Futuristic Communication Ltd (HFCL) has signed a Rs 450-crore contract with Reliance Infocomm for supply of CDMA-based mobile handsets and fixed wireless phones. At the moment, Reliance's handsets requirements are being met by multinational vendors such as LG, Samsung and Nokia.

HFCL said that the supply of handsets will start in the beginning of 2006 and will be completed within 12 months. It is, however, not clear as to how and where HFCL will manufacture the mobile handsets. Until now it has been supplying fixed wireless phones to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd through a technological tie-up with Chinese manufacturer, Huawei. Mr Mahendra Nahata, Managing Director, HFCL, said, "We are extremely proud to have signed this contract with Reliance Infocomm and will strive our best to come to the expectation of our esteemed customer. This contract is a landmark contract for us and will lead the way for increasing our business with private operators in the country."
