Kerala: Rice at Rs 3 a kg mooted

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A high power committee of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) has recommended that the State Government provide 25 kg of rice a month at a reduced price of Rs 3 per kg to each family below the poverty line.

The decision came at the end of a day-long meeting the committee had on Thursday to discuss policy matters. It is now left to the State Cabinet to discuss the recommendation and take a decision.

The UDF also suggested a reduction in power tariff to targeted sections of consumers in order that the poor and the ordinary sections `benefit from the improved financial performance of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).'

Top officials of the Department of Power and the KSEB would discuss this issue with the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
