Agricultural Institutions Industry & Economy - Rural Development States - Andhra Pradesh ICRISAT partners CII in rural growth plan Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Feb. 27 The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) will join the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in a developmental programme launched by the latter in a backward Rajasthan district. "Through the Dungarpur project, we would like to catalyse development by providing business linkages," Mr S. Sen, Deputy-Director General of CII, said. He was speaking at a workshop on `Corporate and science and technology institutions partnership for inclusive and sustainable development' here on Monday. Mr Sen said the programme would be a win-win situation for the people and corporates there. "The project seeks to improve livelihood options for the people," he said. An ICRISAT official said the institute would soon join the developmental initiative launched in Dungarpur. The CII could replicate the model elsewhere also. Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, AP Minister for Agriculture and Civil Supplies, called upon the scientific community to focus on improving the lot of farmers in rain-fed conditions. He called for efforts to develop techniques that could help the farming community in those areas. Several representatives from the corporate sector discussed public-private participation and tie-ups with scientific institutions. Mr S. Gangopadhyay of Titagarh Biotech Ltd said that the industry has several doubts on bio diesel plantation, which need to be cleared. A lot more information is needed on water management (of wastelands), nutrition and productivity. Mr H. Mahadevan, Project Director (Orissa) of BHP Minerals India Pvt Ltd, wanted to know how the farmers could improve productivity.
