The Annual Plan size for Meghalaya for the year 2006-07 has been pegged at Rs 900 crore including a one-time additional central assistance of Rs 51 crore for projects of special importance to the State.
This was finalised at a meeting between the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mr D.D. Lapang.
At the meeting, attention was drawn to the State's expenditure on salaries. It was pointed out that around 12 to 13 per cent of gross State domestic product (GSDP) was going towards salaries and efforts should be made to improve the tax-GSDP ratio.
The Chief Minister said that the thrust areas for the next financial year would include new initiatives aimed at improving quality of life in rural areas, enhanced use of high yield variety seeds, generation of rural employment and popularising vocational education to reduce drop out rates.
He also sought the Centre's support for revitalising cooperative sector and accelerating growth in the IT sector.
