Balaji Telefilms cautiously progressing on film production

Latha Venkatraman

Mumbai , May 8

Despite a successful entry into film production, Balaji Telefilms Ltd is treading this segment with caution.

The television software company has chalked out plans for its next film, which is slated to go on the floor by July. The company has roped in producer Sanjay Gupta for an action-thriller Shoot-out at Lokhandwala with Sanjay Dutt, Vivek Oberoi and Tusshar Kapoor as main actors.

"We have a number of projects but we would like to proceed slowly," Ms Shenazz Nadirshah, Head - Film Production, Balaji Telefilms, said.

Good collections

With Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, the company established its presence in film production quite firmly. Kyaa Kool Hai Hum, released in May 2005, reported fairly good box-office collections.

The film also had a moderate box-office run overseas too. The film was released in the UK, the US, Fiji, Indonesia and Dubai.

The performance of Kyaa Kool Hai Hum is expected to reflect in the company's accounts of 2005-06 fiscal. Balaji Telefilms is slated to announce its full year results on May 9.

However, Koi Aap Sa, another of its film released during the same fiscal, did not fare too well.

Net profit up 39%

For the nine-month period ending December 2005, Balaji Telefilms reported a 39-per cent increase in its net profit at Rs 44.14 crore on total income of Rs 210.93 crore. The company has a significant presence in commissioned television programme, the other revenue contributor being sponsored programmes on regional channels.
