Telecommunications Squeeze on spectrum for radio trunking Thomas K. Thomas
New Delhi , May 23 The Department of Telecom has put a squeeze on the spectrum allocated to public mobile radio trunking services (PMRTS) providers. While at present PMRTS operators get 1 Mhz automatically when taking a licence, the new DoT norm makes radio frequency available only if the company is able to justify the requirement. Issuing an amendment to the licence conditions, DoT said that spectrum to PMRTS will be given only on availability. PMRTS is a two-way radio communication system, which is primarily used by firms involved in logistics. As on March 2006, PMRTS licences have been issued to six companies including Procall, Indian Telephone Industries, Quickcall, Bhilwara Telenet, Arvadoot Transport and Jet AIU Skyline. The move comes even as the DoT is taking steps to make more spectrum available for cellular services.
