Israel may grant duty-free apparel imports

Mumbai , July 17

The Israeli President, Mr Moshe Kazav, has assured that Israel would consider the possibility of providing duty-free status to apparel imports from India.

This assurance was given in Tel Aviv when a delegation of Confederation of Indian Apparel Exporters (CIAe) led by Mr J. B. Jain, Hon. Secretary, CIAe, called upon the Israeli President in Tel Aviv recently.

At the meeting, Mr Kazav was briefed about the performance of Indian apparel exports, which has been recording a growth of over 25 per cent annually in the post quota regime.

Steady rise

Indian apparel exports have been steadily increasing to Israel over the years. Apparel exports to Israel during 2005 were to the order of Rs 8,737 lakh.

In an official statement, Mr Amit Goyal, President, CIAe, said that in the past two years India's exports of textiles and fashion apparel to Israel had grown significantly.

"Almost all leading stores in Israel are now carrying Indian garments. Demand is on the upsurge and shortly Indian apparel exports would double its apparel exports to Israel. The duty free status would be an ideal opportunity to spread our foothold in the Israeli market," added Mr Goyal.
