It would enhance competitiveness of the units.

Coimbatore , Oct. 3

Microsoft India, which has identified Tirupur as one of the clusters under its `Project Vikas' for information communication technology (ICT) solutions and applications, will work with the Tirupur Exporters Association towards implementation of knowledge-based networking in the knitwear units.

At a meeting held at the TEA office recently , Mr A. Sakthivel, TEA President, said his association would sign an MoU with Microsoft India soon. He said the introduction of IT solutions would help knitwear units reduce their cost of production and enhance competitiveness.

ICT solutions

With online ICT solutions, the units can access the global market information anytime anywhere.

A systemised approach in the production planning and control and marketing is the need of the hour for the industry, according to a communication from TEA.

The Microsoft group Head, SME Cluster, Mr Anil Varghese, who was present at the meeting, said that Microsoft's cluster development programme `Project Vikas' for the SME sector announced during Mr Bill Gates' visit to India last year received a strong policy support from the Union Government, which led to the signing of an MoU with the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council early this year.

Scope for tie-ups

This has provided scope for collaboration and creation of an ecosystem of sustainable partnerships for effective absorption of information and communication technology in the SME sector.

Mr Varghese said Microsoft India would disseminate information on the advantages in using IT in supply chain management customer relationship management through Web technology and paperless export documentation. With the introduction of knowledge-based networks, the units could have online chat rooms and collaborative exchanges.

Computer training labs and need-based local software ecosystem will also be provided to the knitwear units, he said.
