Cinema States - Maharashtra International film festival to begin from Nov 23 Our Bureau
Goa is slated to be India's next entertainment hub and IFFI 2006 is spearheading its growing recognition as an International cinema destination
Mumbai , Nov. 5 `The Whole World is One Family'- is the theme for this year's International Film Festival of India (IFFI) starting from November 23 in Goa. Nearly 200 international and Indian films will be screened during the 11-day festival to be inaugurated by the veteran actor Mr Shashi Kapoor. The festival will showcase critically acclaimed international films, world premieres, children's workshops, street animation, music concerts and open-air beach screenings to delegates and the public, Ms Nandini Paliwal, CEO of Entertainment Society of Goa, the nodal agency for organising IIFI 2006 said.
Special shows
This year, IFFI will feature special retrospective shows of Prithviraj Kapoor's films and a special screening of Richard Attenborough's film `Gandhi'. It would be held to mark the centenary of Satyagraha movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi. The festival will open with Penelope Cruz starrer comedy `Volver' that bagged the `Best Screenplay' and `Best Actress' awards at the Festival de Cannes, 2006, and end with Brad Pitt's `Babel', winner of the `Best Director' at Cannes.
Golden peacock
Asia, Africa and Latin America will compete for the Golden Peacock (Rs 10,00,000) award for the Best Film and the Silver Peacock (Rs 5,00,000) for the Most Promising Director. The jury will comprise the Chairman, Mr Rolf de Heer, who is a well-known director from Australia. Other members are, Mr Vincent Maraval, Producer and co-founder of Wild Bunch, France, Mr Olivier Assayas, film director from France and Mr Jahnu Barua, well-known film director from Assam. Addressing the media on Saturday, Mr Pratapsing Rane, Chief Minister of Goa, said that Goa is slated to be India's next entertainment hub and IFFI 2006 is spearheading its growing recognition as an International cinema destination. This year IFFI brings together global participation, world-class entertainment and internationally acclaimed films. Ms Paliwal said that society is in the process of making a yearly event calendar encouraging associated ventures with international brands in the field of cinema and will work towards making Goa the entertainment heart of the country.
