Dec. 6
The Tamil Nadu Government has passed a law that does away with the common entrance test for professional courses.
Applicants to professional courses in medical, dental and engineering will be considered for admission based on their marks in the qualifying examination at the Higher Secondary (Plus Two) level of the State Board or any equivalent exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Examination or other States' Board.
The Tamil Nadu Admission in Professional Education Institutions Act, 2006, which was passed in the Assembly on Wednesday, prescribes a `normalisation' formula to equate the marks obtained by students of other Boards or Authority with the marks obtained by those in the State Board.
If the highest mark scored by a student in a subject in the State Board exam is 100 per cent and the highest by a student in the same subject in any other board exam is 90, both the highest marks will be considered to be equal at 100.
If a student scored 60 in that subject when the first mark is 90 for that subject in the same board the `normalisation' will involve the formula: 100X60/90, or 66.66 per cent.
Once normalised, a common merit list will be formed and considered for admission.
The law is based on the recommendations of the committee.
