New Delhi, Feb. 20 The level of congestion between networks remains alarmingly high in some areas, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The regulatory body has set the congestion parameter at less than 0.5 per cent, or in other words not more than one in 200 calls between two operators should face congestion problems. The level of congestion at points of interconnection (PoIs) between various service providers reflects the ease with which a customer of one network can communicate with a customer of another network, or the effectiveness of the interconnection between two networks.

TRAI has released its analysis report on the level of congestion at PoIs for the months of October, November and December 2006. According to TRAI's analysis of congestion reports provided by cellular mobile service providers, the number of congested PoIs had increased from 483 in September to 526 in October of 2006.
