Research & Development Symantec to expand R&D activity
Vishwanath Kulkarni
Symantec had put a freeze on new hiring globally to contain its expenses, excluding India and China.
Bangalore March 16 After setting up a global security response laboratory in Pune last year, security solutions vendor Symantec Corporation would be expanding its research and development (R&D) footprint in India by setting up a new facility in Chennai. The Chairman & CEO of Symantec, Mr John Thompson, will inaugurate the Chennai facility in April, which will act as an extension of the company's R&D centre in Pune, company officials said. Symantec already supports a portion of its customer services from Chennai.
Doubling Investment
Additionally, Symantec also plans to expand its presence in Pune to accommodate up to 2,500 employees from 2,000 at present. "With these facilities, we expect to double our investment in India over the next few years," Mr Thompson had said. Symantec has grown the engineering teams of both BindView and Veritas in Pune after acquiring them few years ago. In 2005-06, Symantec India had filed 57 patents.
Expanding Operations
Over the next few years, Symantec plans to have close to 4,000 people in India split between Pune and Chennai centres. Following a weaker-than-expected performance in the December quarter, Symantec had put a freeze on new hiring globally to contain its expenses, excluding India and China. "We are not applying this measure to our research and development groups based in India and China. Our plan to expand these operations remains in place as we look to broaden our access to engineering talent on the worldwide basis," its CFO, Mr James Beer, had told analysts in a recent call.
