Reliance Haryana SEZ among 33 approved

Our Bureau

New Delhi June 5 The Government on Tuesday cleared 33 approvals for special economic zones (SEZs), including formal approval to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd for airport-based multi-product SEZ and to Reliance Haryana SEZ Ltd for multi-services and in-principle approval to Reliance's port-based SEZ at Rewas in Maharashtsra for multi-product SEZ.

At the Board of Approval (BoA) meeting for SEZ presided over by the Commerce Secretary, Mr Gopal K. Pillai, 44 proposals were taken up, of which 24 SEZs were accorded formal approvals and nine SEZs in-principle nod. The Rewas port is strategically important as it would be the last halt on Railways' Delhi-Mumbai freight corridor and is contiguous to Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Officials said about 200 high-speed freight trains would run on the corridor, which would also link SEZs, industrial complexes and ports.

Mr Pillai told reporters that BoA was awaiting the response of promoters Mr Mukesh Ambani and his associate, Mr Anand Jain, as well as the Maharashtra Government on the Nhavi Mumbai SEZs, regarding which the Revenue Department representative had at the last meeting expressed some reservations.

Important among the formal approvals are the agro processing SEZ by MIDC in Maharashtra, IT/ITES SEZ by Wipro Ltd in Andhra Pradesh, multi-product SEZ by Indiabulls Industrial Infrastructure Ltd in Maharashtra, two IT/ITES SEZs by TIDCO in Tamil Nadu, one in Andhra Pradesh, Handicrafts and Artisan SEZ by Gujarat Growth Centres Development Corporation Ltd in Gujarat, Electronic Hardware SEZ by SIPCOT in Tamil Nadu. Among the in-principle approvals were Gem and Jewellery SEZ by Gitanjali Gems Ltd in Maharashtra, leather industry SEZ by MIDC in Maharashtra, textile SEZ by DLF Ltd in West Bengal.

In all, 114 SEZs have been notified so far, while another 150 cases where land is available are pending before the BoA, officials said.
