Mumbai June 6 Consumer electronics major Sony India on Wednesday unveiled its High Definition (HD) range of handy cameras and cyber-shot digital camera models.

While digicams would be priced from Rs 25,000, Sony's new handycam range would start from Rs 60,000.

Pixels resolution

The company claims that the range would have more than twice the pixels resolution that the existing Standard Definition offers.

The captured images would be more life-like and would offer a much more realistic experience to the consumers.

Adding to its handycam range would be HDR-CX7K in Memory Stick format, the HDR-HC5 in DV tape format, the HDR-UX5 in DVD format and HDR-SR5 in hard disk format. Apart from high quality videos, one can capture still images too with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound capabilities.

In the digicam range, Sony would be offering three new cyber-shot cameras — DSC-W200, DSC-T100 and DSC-H9.

With enhanced features such as resolutions of 8.1 and 12.1 mega pixels, the cameras can be connected to a high definition television set or an LCD set to enjoy the life-like experience of the images.

The cameras would also enable consumers to enjoy pictures on their TV sets along with music, according to the company.

The technology used in the digicams also takes care of shaky hands, minimises blur and preserves images in bright highlights and gives good results in difficult lighting conditions.

Market share

Speaking at the launch, Mr Masaru Tamagawa, Managing Director, Sony India Pvt Ltd, said: "We have two-thirds of the total market share in handycams in India and plan to sell two lakh pieces in the range above Rs 10,000 by the end of this year. In digicam, the target is to sell three lakh units."

Mr Tamagawa pegged the market for handy cameras in India at Rs 60 crore and digicam at Rs 8 crore.

The products would be available in around 100 Sony World outlets and select electronic chains in India, he added.

Mr Sachin Dev Rai, the company's Product Head, Digital Imaging, said the company expects HD digicams to contribute 20 per cent and the new handycams to contribute five per cent of the entire sales in both categories in India.
