Set up animation parks: Assocham

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 2

To prevent the animation industry from spending overseas to make high-end animated movies, industry chamber Assocham has urged the Government to set up animation parks with hi-tech studios. These parks could alone generate employment opportunities for skilled animators to the extent of two lakhs in the next three years because of the industry's growth potential.

The parks will help the animation industry reach a market size of $1 billion by 2010, with an estimated 30 per cent annual growth, according to the Chamber.

In 2006, the animation industry market size was estimated at $360 million. In a paper on the animation industry, to be submitted to the Government shortly, the Chamber points out that in the absence of hi-tech studios and improved technology in India, Indian animation corporate houses currently outsource their advanced animation work in countries like US, France, Canada, Malaysia, and China. The Chamber suggests that corporates that intend to set up the parks should be accorded with a minimum 10 years tax holiday incentive.
