DoT sets cut-off date for telecom licence applicants

New Delhi, Sept. 24 With more than a dozen companies queuing up to acquire a telecom service licence, the Department of Telecom has decided that it will not accept any new application from October 1. DoT is also formulating a fresh set of guidelines for processing the new applications that it has already received. DoT has received about 180 applications from 14 companies and more are expected to follow.

“It has been decided that new applications for Unified (Telecom) Access Services (UAS) Licences will not be accepted by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) after 01.10.2007 till further orders,” said an official statement.

Earlier in the day Communication and IT Minister Mr A Raja said that a panel is being set up to scrutinise the applications.

“I have asked DoT to form a committee to frame guidelines for grant of license to the new applicants. All the applications will be scrutinised and limited applications will be selected for awarding the licence.”

The Minister said the grant of licenses would be subject to availability of spectrum. The committee would also see if existing companies were seeking licenses as proxy to bypass cross holding laws.

On allocation of spectrum, Mr Raja said, “I would be fair to all the three categories — existing players who need radio waves for expansion, new players who have licence but yet to start service in the absence of spectrum and the new applicants who are yet to get licence.”
