Kingfisher likely to be IPL umpire sponsor

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 14 The DLF Indian Premier League’s six associate sponsors and umpire sponsor should add another Rs 658 crore to the BCCI’s already bulging coffers.

Kingfisher is reportedly in talks to become the umpire sponsor in a deal for about $28 million for five years. Another associate sponsor, after Hero Honda’s $22.5-million five-year deal, is to be announced early next week.

The much talked about league set to premier on April 18 when Vijay Mallya’s boys, making up the Royal Challengers for Bangalore, meet Shah Rukh Khan and friends’ Kolkata Knight Riders. Both teams will be sporting Reebok branded gear, apparel in one case and footwear for another. The Kolkata franchise has also tied up real estate developer HDIL, Tag Heuer, and media group ABP amongst others as sponsors.

Named after the UB group’s premium whisky, the Bangalore team will be dressed by Louis Philippe for its off field appearances. GMR’s Delhi Daredevils has found sponsors, who will be introduced on Saturday.

According to media buyers, sponsors are prioritising DLF IPL’s broadcast over the India –South Africa test series which starts on March 26. The hype and media attention is expected to drive advertisers to SET Max which will be broadcasting the tournament. Sony is believed to have tied up sponsorship deals with Hyundai and Vodaphone. While the latter is believed to be coming on board as ‘presenting sponsor’ for Rs 18-24 crore, Hyundai could be paying anywhere between Rs 14 and 15 crore according to a media buyer.
