Industry Associations Industry & Economy - Radio/TV News broadcasters decide on code of conduct, redressal system Our Bureau New Delhi, April 22 The News Broadcasters Association has formulated for itself a code of ethics and redressal system for audiences. “We have sent the details of our code of conduct and redressal mechanism to the Government as it had asked us to, last year. Our members will implement these in letter and spirit,” said Ms Annie Joseph, Secretary-General, NBA. Viewers can look forward to fewer minutes of celebrity gossip, and shorter stories on strange and inexplicable phenomena if broadcasters keep their promises. NBA-member broadcasters are committed to full and fair presentation of news, neutrality, safeguards against glorifying crime and violence and prompt corrections of errors, amongst others. Complaints will be addressed by the News Broadcasting Standards Disputes Redressal Authority, after the broadcaster has been given 30 days to respond. The Authority, consisting of a Chairperson and six other members (three are to be senior editors), all holding two-year terms, will meet twice a month. In case of violation against its own code of conduct, the Authority could impose a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh or even recommend suspension, or revocation of accreditation. However, the complainant should have a valid grievance, because the Authority will also levy a fee of Rs 1,000 per complaint “for the purposes of performing its functions”. It could also raise it to as much as Rs 10,000 or even pay for the complainants’ costs by the same amount. More Stories on : Industry Associations | Radio/TV
