‘The Happening’ grosses $64.5 m

New Delhi, June 17

UTV claims its second international co-production, The Happening, which released last week, is a box office success having grossed $31.5 million over the weekend in the US. According to the company, worldwide figures are flowing in but consolidated figures show close to an additional $33 million from rest of the world. The Happening was released with over 4,500 prints over 2,986 theatres across North America, with another 5,600 prints across the world. UTV claims the movie was number one across several markets including France ($4.6 million from 550 screens), Spain ($3.8 million from 389 screens) and Italy ($1.9 milllion from 371 screens). Other notable territories included the UK, Mexico and Russia. The film, directed by M Night Shyamalan, was co-produced by UTV and 20th Century Fox at a budget of $55 million. The company’s first release, Namesake, also a co-production with Fox, earned over $18 million in box office returns, with an equal amount from in home video and TV syndication.
