Discovery Channel announces new prime time band

Chennai, Sept. 18 Discovery Channel is launching Ultimate Discovery, a new prime-time programme band on which the “biggest, boldest and cutting-edge programmes” from across the world will be aired.

Speaking to newspersons at a press conference to announce the launch here today, Mr Rahul Johri, Senior Vice-President & General Manager (India), Discovery Networks Asia Pacific, said the one-hour time band from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. would have shows ranging from science, technology, history, natural world, adventure and exploration.

New line-up

Beginning October 6, Ultimate Discovery’s line-up includes When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions, which show rare or never-seen-before images from NASA’s archives including those filmed by astronauts themselves; Future Weapons, which feature the most lethal and sinister weapons yet devised; Alaska Experiment, which will track four groups of ordinary men and women who have taken up a challenge to survive the Alaskan wilderness; David Attenborough’s Life in Cold Blood on reptiles and amphibians; Fight Quest on the world’s oldest martial art forms; Man vs Wild, a survival skills show; The Story of India, Discover India and Next World, which will reveal the technology, ideas and inventions that may well shape the future.

Mr Johri also said the Animal Planet channel was preparing itself for a re-launch with a new logo.

Discovery has applied to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting for permission to launch three more channels – Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo (all about motorised equipment including automobiles, boats and aeroplanes) and Discovery HD.

One more channel that’s on air in India is Discovery Travel & Living. In India, the three Discovery channels now on air reach 93 million subscribers. Discovery Communications distributes its various channels in more than 170 countries, reaching more than 1.5 billion subscribers.
