Bangalore , Aug.11

INDIAN IT services firms in the healthcare segment must focus on providing simple and reliable solutions, which are cost effective, Mr Biagio A. Longano, Consultant, IBM Global Services, South Africa, has said.

Speaking at a meet on "IT in Healthcare'' organised by CII here today, he said firms must leverage IT implementation in process design for the convenience of the customers.

The medical fraternity would not approach the IT sector with open arms, he said, a remark that was echoed by others.

Mr S. Bhaskar, Director, Medical Systems, Philips Software Centre, said large part of the population, which was outside the healthcare system needed smaller and cheaper medical equipment.

According to Mr Charles Nettle, Chief Technology Executive, McKesson Corporation, the key demands for IT in the healthcare system were in core process improvements — core delivery, billing and claims and purchasing and supply. "There are clinical needs, revenue cycle needs and resource management needs that companies can seek to meet," he said.

Mr Jeremy Lim, Industry Development Director, Sun Microsystems, Asia South, asked companies to get the big picture right, to set priorities on whether they wanted to service the clinical or operational side and to innovate. "Think big, start small and scale fast,'' he said.
