Science & Technology Brahmos set for final trials in two months Our Bureau
BANGALORE, Dec. 12 BRAHMOS, the country's first supersonic cruise missile, is set to undergo final trials in two months before it goes in for joint production with Russia. Dr V.K. Aatre, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, said for the Indian side of the production, "two private industrial groups have been identified as major partners along, with several smaller ones" to implement the Rs 1,250-crore project. The project is slated to go into production in 2004 and is meant for induction by the Indian armed forces and the Russian navy. Dr Aatre said the missile could be launched from multiple platforms such as ship, ground, air and also from mobile launchers. Flying at three times the speed of sound, Brahmos will also be among DRDO's star exhibits at the Aero India show to be held in Bangalore in February 2003. A recently formed 61:39 Indian majority joint venture company based in Delhi is headed by Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, CEO of the project and Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO. The project will be co-ordinated for vendor development through two branches, set up in Hyderabad and Moscow. Once it is inducted into the armed forces and its capabilities are proven, the missile, which has much market potential, can be taken up for export, Dr Aatre said. While Indian defence scientists will contribute part of the avionics and technology, the two sides are also looking at developing separate technologies, said Dr Aatre, who was here for the three-day international conference on smart materials co-organised by the Indian Institute of Science. Said to be in the league of the US Tomahawk and the Russian Moskit, Brahmos gets its name from the rivers Brahmaputra and Moscow. Brahmos was first test-fired in July last year and in April this year.
