BJP victory

This refers to the landslide BJP victory in the Gujarat Assembly elections. The BJP has conducted a successful `hindutva' experiment in the State. This is sure to be replicated throughout the rest of the country in the forthcoming Assembly and General elections.

The BJP victory in Gujarat is a reaction to terrorism. Gujarat has always been a peace-loving region, and it is sad that the State was also affected by communal violence. Also, the fact that the Congress (I) campaign in the State was headed by a former RSS worker, affected the credibility of the party, and could be another reason for the BJP's landslide victory. There was a time when it was more prestigious to be a member of the Working Committee (WC) of the Congress than being a Cabinet Minister. Not anymore. One salient feature of the Gujarat election is the emergence of the two-party system.
