Non-conventional Energy Expert call to harness alternative energy sources Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 11 ENERGY security will be one of the key challenges for India in the coming decades. With projected requirement of five million barrels of crude per day by 2030, the country needs to look for alternate sources, according to Dr D.S. Viswanath of the University of Missouri. While solar energy with the help of new materials research to harness it offers much scope, energy from the oceans and wind must be tapped. India could depend on hydrogen energy, where it should accelerate research, he said while inaugurating a seminar on `Chemical Enginee- ring-Global Challenges' at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology. Chemical plant safety and national security through the monitoring of chemical substances are other areas of challenge for Indian and international scientists. Dr Viswanath, who also delivered the right Dr P.S. Murti memorial lecture, said that the All India Council for Technical Education and the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineering should ensure that colleges have relevant course curricula. The Director of the IICT, Dr J.S. Yadav, said the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has evolved a Rs 25-crore initiative on energy security issues.
