INDIA is exploring West Asia North Africa (WANA) region for gems and jewellery sector, Mr Sanjay Kothari, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), has said.
A nine-member trade delegation of the council led by Mr Kothari, Chairman of the council, visited the West Asia North Africa (WANA) countries namely Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Italy for the promotion of Indian gem & jewellery trade. The objective of this visit was to create awareness about Indian gem and jewellery sector and explore trade opportunities in the WANA region.
``The future of the gem and jewellery industry lies in the jewellery segment as we have reached a saturation point in cut and polished diamonds. The Indian delegation to the WANA region has joined hands and explored bilateral areas of co-operation in studded jewellery manufacturing in these regions,'' he said in a release.
``The issue that needs immediate attention is the reduction of import duty levied on jewellery which is a deterrent for better trade relations with these countries,'' Mr Kothari said.
The delegation's visit to Arezzo and Vicenza has opened avenues for intra-regional trade between Italy and India.
