Science & Technology `Geo-scientists must use digital techniques' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 7 MORE than 600 officers have been trained in the use of digital techniques in geosciences at the Hyderabad-based, Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSITI), in the last few years under Project INDIGEO. An Indo-Dutch collaborative venture, INDIGEO was set up at GSITI to develop human resources applying these skills in various earth sciences institutions of India and neighbouring countries. The Union Secretary, Department of Mines, Ministry of Coal and Mines, Mr C.D. Arha, who inaugurated the project workshop, organised by the GSITI on Tuesday said the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and its sister organisations need to utilise the digital techniques and also the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Mr N.K. Agarwal, Deputy Director General, GSITI and Project Director, INDIGEO, said the training has benefited professionals from organisations such as the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), GSI, Atomic Minerals Division (AMD), Singareni Collieries, State Ground Water Departments, Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL) and several Indian Universities and colleges. The focus of the training programmes has been on GIS, digital mapping, image processing, digital cartography, modelling techniques for mineral exploration, Internet GIS and strategic change management, according to an official release.
