Aid for convention centre in Kerala
Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Ms Renuka Chowdhury, has said that the State Government's proposal for financial assistance for construction of a "modest convention centre" can be considered under the scheme of assistance for large revenue-generating projects.
The Union Minister's stand was made known in a letter to Mr Varkala Radhakrishnan, Member of Parliament, who represents Chirayinkil. Ms Chowdhury recalled that international convention centres had been sanctioned in the interim Budget for 2004-05 for New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Rajasthan. The Union Ministry normally extended assistance to those tourism projects identified in consultation with the state governments.
Nine such projects, totalling Rs 84.13 crore in investments, had been sanctioned for the State during 2002-03 and three projects, worth Rs 57 crore, in 2003-04. Ms Chowdhury went on to add that the State Government had been requested to forward proposals for the development of tourist centres for consideration during the current financial year.
