New Delhi , Aug. 17

IN order to accelerate the completion of various projects and increase the outlay under Special Railway Safety Fund (SRSF), the Ministry of Railways has sought around Rs 3,000 crore from the Planning Commission. This is in addition to the annual plan outlay of around Rs 14,500 crore estimated for the current financial year 2004-2005.

The demand includes "Rs 900 crore for financing the national project Udhampur-Qazigund-Srinagar-Baramulla new line, targeted for completion by August 2007" and "Rs 2,027 crore as budgetary support from the Planning Commission," says the official release.

The funds required for creation, replacement and renewal of railway assets are provided under the Railway Plan, which in 2004-2005 stands at Rs 14,498 crore. This is higher than the revised estimates of 2003-2004, which was Rs 13,918 crore. The Railway Plan is funded through budgetary support from the general exchequer, internal resources, safety funds and market borrowings.
