Broadband MTNL plans broadband at Rs 500 a month Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 4 MTNL is hoping to be able to provide broadband services at an affordable rate of roughly Rs 500 for unlimited access. The company is aiming at getting 1.4 lakh broadband customers in Mumbai by March, 2005 and a million customers by December 2005, according to Mr. R.L. Dube, Executive Director, Mumbai. With 24 lakh copper lines under its belt, MTNL has enough copper through which to provide broadband through ADSL technology, he said. Tenders are being finalised for the equipment required for this. However, MTNL would be offering both broadband access through ADSL and fibre, especially in localities where enterprises have already leased fibre from the company. The access speeds could be as high as six mbps through copper itself, said Mr Dube. "Applications such as video-on-demand and the like would be offered." Currently, MTNL is the second largest ISP in the country after BSNL. It has over 8.5 lakh customers in both Mumbai and Delhi accessing the Net through the post-paid dial-up service. MTNL subscribers can dial in to the Internet for 10 paise per minute, inclusive of dial-up and ISP charges. Users can also opt for a package that allows unlimited dial-up access for Rs 700 a month. In addition, users of MTNL's CDMA service, Garuda, can access the Net at a speed of 144 kbps.
