The Pune centre contributed to about $600,000 during its last fiscal year.

Pune , Oct. 21

WITH three acquisitions happening during its fiscal year, Fremont-based Versant Corporation is all set to move most of its operations to its Pune centre.

Talking to presspersons, Mr Nick Ordon, Chief Executive Officer, Verdant, said the Pune centre was initially established as a satellite research and development office in 1998.

Since then, the centre has grown and become a full-fledged R&D facility with several important aspects of Versant's flagship database product built out of Pune.

Versant has three software development centres - one in Silicon Valley in the US which caters to database expertise, the second in Hamburg in Germany which looks at data access and the third in Pune.

He said as part of its consolidation strategy, the Pune centre would now become its largest data centre for the entire company by taking part in projects that were happening at other centres.

Outlining the acquisitions of the company during its last fiscal year (November 2003-October 2004) Mr Ordon said in July, the companyacquired FastObjects Inc of the US and its Canadian distributor. In June, it acquiredJDO Genie [PTY] Ltd, a privately-held South African company and in March, 2004 it had merged with Poet Holdings, a public company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange..

Mr Ordon said Versant had recently launched two new products to deliver object persistence and object relational mapping for both Java and .NET communities. This new product line called Versant Open Access has been accepted well by the industry and said these products had put the Versant Pune Centre into spotlight.

He said as part of the company's plans, Versant would now appoint a General Manager for its Indian operations.

The company has also appointed a consultant to coordinate global off-shoring across all facilities to leverage world-class talent and opportunity delivered by its Pune facility.

Mr Ordon said the Pune operations had contributed about $600,000 during its last fiscal ending October 2003 (November-October) and was estimating a growth of 10 per cent during the current calendar year. He said currently about 25 persons were working at its Pune centre and added that this is expected to be ramped up to 50 soon.
