THE Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP), known as Velugu, and the Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) would be merged to form a new entity.
The merger, that would come into force shortly, has been necessitated following confusion at the grass root level about the funding to the thrift groups run by the DWCRA and also those of the Velugu.
Inaugurating a three-day conference of the Project Directors of SERP here on Saturday, the Minister for Rural Development, Mr D. Srinivas, said that common guidelines were being framed for the new entity that would come into being after the merger. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, would give a fresh name to the new entity.
The Minister said that the merger would clear all the shortcomings. The chances of retrenchment of existing staff due the merger are minimal on account of the massive on-going poverty alleviation programmes.
