NTPC's nuclear power plans

Archana Chaudhary

THE Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Anil Kakodkar, today confirmed that the NTPC is in talks with NPCIL for exploring the idea of entering nuclear power generation.

"There have been some preliminary talks. It will take a while before a serious proposal emerges. We have to address several connected issues such as ensuring things will be done in a safe manner ... we have to address control issues. It will take a while before these things fructify, but it is entirely possible," he said.

According to the Atomic Energy Act, nuclear power can be produced by the Government or by a company in which the Government holds 51 per cent stake.
