Docu fest marks Hyderabad Film Club anniversary

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , March 17

VETERAN film and documentary makers such as Shyam Benegal, M.F. Husain and B. Narsing Rao are joining the Hyderabad Film Club in celebrating 30 years of its existence.

Benegal inaugurated the week-long Hyderabadi Documentary and Short Film Festival on Tuesday.

The festival lined up the best of documentary and short films produced in the last five decades by Hyderabadis.

"Hyderabadis mean all kinds of Hyderabadis. Those who belong to this place, those who made it their home and those Hyderabadis who made it big elsewhere," Mr Sumanaspati Reddy of the Club told Business Line.

"The festival will kick off a vibrant documentary and short film movement in Andhra Pradesh," he said.

The inaugural film was `Hyderabad - A place in the heart', directed by Zafar Hai. The film is an insider's view of the Nawabi culture. On the last day, the organisers slated a meeting with Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao on composing music for documentaries.

`Through the eyes of a painter' made by M.F. Husain too would be screened. Shot outdoors, it is a travelogue on Rajasthan. In the mid `60s, the Government produced the film. The black and white film was the first Indian film to win the golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

Inspired by the medium, Husain bought a 16mm camera and shot a series of short films between 1967 and 1973. `Painter's sketchbook' is one of them. The festival has a special place for films made by debutants. `Smarana' is one such film. Produced and directed by C. Vanaja, the 30-minute film portrays how women, mostly mothers, reminisced about their sons and daughters who joined revolutionary movements.

A souvenir with write-ups on directors and information on documentary makers and their films would be released.
