Broadband Karnataka leads in broadband connections Thomas K Thomas
New Delhi , March 31 WHEN it comes to broadband services, it's Karnataka that leads the race. According to the data available with the Department of Telecom, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has got maximum interest for the high-speed data service from the southern State with over 21,000 registrations. Karnataka is followed by Kolkata where BSNL has got 19,000 registrations while Delhi comes third with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd reporting 18,000 registrations. The two state-owned companies have received close to two-lakh registrations across nine States since the broadband service was launched in January. Interestingly, Maharashtra the State with maximum number of Internet connections has recorded only 16,000 registrations for broadband services. Karnataka, which leads on the broadband front, is fourth when it comes to dial up Internet usage. BSNL has got reasonable response from other States such as Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. While three metro cities figure in the top five, Mumbai seems to be lagging behind with just 4,700 registrations. Senior BSNL officials said that the initial response to the service has been good and the numbers are expected to exponentially grow as the roll out spreads into more cities. The Government has fixed a target of one million broadband connections in the next one year. Recently, it had issued a notice to all operators to keep data speeds of more than 256 kilo bits per second while offering the service.
