Mumbai , May 11

THE International Gemmological Institute (IGI) has set up `School of Gemmology' in Mumbai.

Along with certification, the IGI has also focused on education with the intention of having uniform standards and terminology for various categories of stones within the trade, grading houses & customers.

Mr Rajiv Bhandari, Managing Director of De Beers India Pvt Ltd, inaugurated the newly created facility and expanded lab facility on Monday.

"We are known for our expertise in manufacturing and polishing diamonds. We'll soon be able to have the best graders & jewellery designers through IGI's School of Gemmology,'' Mr Bhandari said at the inauguration.

"With the availability of lightweight branded jewellery, certified by IGI, jewellery companies have seen a huge growth, since consumers feel confident and buy diamond jewellery round the year,'' he added.

"The creation of IGI's School of Gemmology was a natural consequence, since all our courses — the rough and polished diamonds, corporate courses and the recently introduced professional Jewellery Design Programme have met with tremendous response and much appreciation from the trade,'' said Mr Tehmasp Printer, Managing Director of IGI (India).

In India, IGI's School of Gemmology would be the only one of its kind since it has a very practical orientation.

IGI certifies more than 500 stones and jewellery everyday and exclusively certifies most of the country's popular retail brands such as Asmi, Arisia, Nakshatra, Sangini, Gitanjali, D'damas, Sveni and The Ash Collection.
