THE Coimbatore District Exporters and Importers Association (Codexia) has expressed concern over the fall-out of the High Court order on closure of dyeing units in Tirupur on the effluent treatment issue.
It wanted the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram's intervention to save the knitwear exports which, according to CODEXIA, will come to a standstill if the units are allowed to be shut down.
In a communication addressed to Mr Chidambaram, the Codexia President, Mr A.M.M. Khaleel, has stated that, to set up the reverse osmosis plant needed to cater all the dyeing units in Tirupur, a minimum of Rs 400 crore is needed, and it would be impossible for the small dyeing units there to raise the money in a short time.
Any delay will ruin the Tirupur knitwear industry and drive away the export business from Tirupur, which would be a gain to India's competitors such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Codexia suggested that the Minister advice commercial banks to provide soft loan for the establishment of reverse osmosis plants by the dyeing units.
