A welcome move

This refers to the report "Panel calls for content regulator, rules for TV programmes, ads" (Business Line December 20). The recommendation of the I&B Ministry committee to set up a content regulator is welcome.

It should have occurred to the TV channels themselves to institute a voluntary and accountable system of self-regulation.

The companies running the TV channels are also required to assume corporate social responsibility. Instead programmes focussing on banned social practices such as child marriage and bigamy and sati are telecast.

The welcome government move, it is hoped, will have sufficient teeth and those administering it will go about their task without fear or favour. Industry should welcome this move not only in letter but also in spirit.
