Concor hikes tariffs by 22 pc

Mamuni Das

New Delhi , April 4

Within days of the Railways hiking haulage charges, Container Corporation of India (Concor) has increased its tariffs.

The increased tariffs came into effect from April 1, which is when the Railways' hiked rates came into effect.

On an average, the domestic containerised tariffs are up by 20-22 per cent, whereas the EXIM traffic rates are up by about ten per cent, according to official sources.

Concor's costs went up recently following an increase in haulage charges by the Railways. Concor pays haulage charges to the Railways for using its tracks and signalling system.

For the export-import (EXIM) traffic, the highest increase in tariff is about 20 per cent, which is directed towards high load containers.

For lighter load containers in EXIM segment, Concor has increased the tariffs by about 2.5 per cent.

Concor has, however, absorbed some of the increase in costs and has partially passed on the increase to its customers. "The increase in Railways haulage charges ranged from about 31 per cent to 210 per cent for various segments for EXIM traffic," said a senior Concor official.

In the last fortnight, the Railways had issued a notification raising the haulage charges for containerised services.

The increase ranged from five per cent to as high as 210 per cent, depending on the distance and weight slabs.

The haulage rate hikes were highest for short distance and heavy weight containers.

It was also on the high side, particularly for the above 20-tonne gross weight containers.

Moreover, the Railways had introduced uniform haulage charges for domestic and export-import traffic.

Earlier, the haulage rates for domestic traffic were lower than that for EXIM traffic for some segments, whereas for others, the EXIM haulage rates were lower than domestic haulage rates.
