Tea prices drop at Coonoor auction

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , April 17

Prices dropped around Rs 2 a kg at Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auction here this week, as the demand was not adequate to create high-bid competition even for the low volume on offer.

Some teas managed to remain flat while only very few lots advanced in price. A volume of 8.19 lakh kgs was offered comprising 5.98 lakh kgs of leaf and 2.21 lakh kgs of dusts.

CORPORATE BUYERS

Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Lever Ltd bought brighter liquoring and medium varieties. Goodricke picked up CTC leaf grades. JV Gokal chose bolder grades.

CIS shippers bought bolder grades of good and medium varieties. Pakistan picked up well-made grades. Iraq was selective at the lower end of the market.

Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 78.55 a kg, followed by Homedale estate Rs 75.09, Garswood Estate Clonal Special Rs 72.89 and Professor Rs 71.70.

Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 38-39 a kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 62-67 for the brighter liquoring grades. The bids ranged Rs 40-41 for the plain dust grades and Rs 63-68 for the brighter liquoring grades.
