Kolkata , May 5

Cellular service provider Hutch on Friday announced plans to invest Rs 500 crore on network augmentation and allied projects in the Calcutta Telecom District and the West Bengal Telecom Circle in the current calendar year.

Speaking to newspersons at a function held here to mark the launch of an "Anytime Kiosk" in Kolkata, Mr Sridhar Rao, CEO, Hutchison Telecom East Ltd, said the cellular service provider had firmed up plans to augment and upgrade its network in the whole of West Bengal, including Kolkata.

"To make life easier for consumers", a total of 100 "Anytime Kiosks" would be set up in the course of 2006.

Touch screen kiosks

Mr Rao said that these kiosks would be equipped with touch screen devices and would provide Hutch customers 24X7 service interface.

Besides basic services such as bill payments by cash, prepaid recharges by cash, prepaid and post-paid activations and live demonstrations of all value-added services, these kiosks would also offer innovative services such as conference call facilities for three or more mobile users and activation of voice mail service.

According to him, Hutch already has more than one million customers in Kolkata alone.

As such, the company's focus now was on introducing a new concept of retailing in the cellular industry where customer convenience was the key element.
